The University of Theatre and Film Arts is the smallest high level art university in Hungary, and is also one of the oldest such institutions in the country. A total of about 450 students are taught at the university currently.
The original Actor’s Training School opened its doors in 1865, and since then has gone through various changes during its long history. New theatre training programs were added after Ferenc Hont’s reforms of 1945, and the institution gained its current form after the fall of Communism in 1989/90. Training programs are run by the Theatre Arts Institute, the Film and Media Institute, the Art Theory and Mediation Institute and the Doctoral School. A variety of professions are taught at the university, with certified programs for actors of prose, musical and puppet theatre, directors of theatre and film, dramaturgs, choreographers, film editors, cinematographers, set designers and television producers as well. The institution became a university in 2000. Its current rector is Géza M. Tóth.
